For something that's fairly new and selling fast, any solid figures you can get are bound to be out of date.
But some indications are:
In the first 200 days of iPhone sales (up to early 2008) Apple said they sold 4m worldwide.
As late as Aug 2008, Apple were estimating 11m sales for 2008, and another 25m for 2009. Of course recent economic events may have put a dent in those projections. Then again, a lot of the growth would come from rolling out to new countries like Russia, and the prices are going to be falling.
Anyway, the numbers are not in for sales in the last quarter of 2008.
A reasonable guess as to the current numbers of iPhones in use worldwide is 12-16m, which could well double or triple by the end of 2009.
