"Generally, freight train locomotives pull a maximum load of 1200 tonnes in tankers and hoppers but introduction of more powerful locomotives in early 2000 raised the maximum load for gasoline to 1400 tonnes"

Found a couple of links that may be of use, all the trains that come to us are what are known as 66 class.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Rail_Class_66

It appears they run at 3000 bhp at the rail so not sure how that compares with US locos?

We use a company called EWS (English, Welsh,Scottish.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English,_Welsh_and_Scottish_Railway

I believe most power stations use this company for there coal wagons

Will you find a method for determining pulling power and then convert 3000 bhp into a measurement that can be compared to US locomotive pulling power?

Pulling power of any rolling stock is measured in Tractive effort.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tractive_effort

Assuming that the maximum tractive force would be the best indicator of how many wagons can be pulled, the EWS class 66 series that are used in the UK have a tractive force of 91900 lbs maximum, compared to the BNSF which is widley used throughout the US, their General Electric ES44AC / ES44C4 / ES44DC / ES40DC Under AC conditions produce a tractive force of 166000 lbs.
http://4rail.net/reference_rollingstock_ge_es44acdc.html

Therefore I would say that the US coal trains have nearly double the pulling power of the UK 66 series.
