If you would like to try out Google Gadgets, they offer great documentation and samples. A good way to learn the process and then transfer it to other widget, gadget platforms.

How do I make a widget?
I'm looking to make a widget for my site. Or just a button link I can put in various places(blogs, profiles, etc). Could I go to google apps for this or what? Any suggestions would help.

A widget is just a chunk of reusable code. If you can create an interactive web page and graphics, you can create a widget. Here is a web page for those who are less into the guts of things. It steps you through making a widget and gives you web sites that can create the guts for you: http://www.10000words.net/2008/08/how-to-create-great-widget.html
