Google provided a different type of search. At the time the major search engine was Yahoo and Yahoo does not spider the net searching for websites to index. Instead it has people submit sites and at some point has a human approve those results. Google searched the web and analyzed sites linking and layout to determine relevancy, both things that other search engines did not do. By doing this, and also avoiding paid search they were able to gain a loyal search following and provide superior results.

What was unique about Googles spider algorithm? Alta Vista had a crawler, yet it lost market lead.
The unique part was that it analyzed linking patterns which afaik Alta Vista did not do.
