Fortunately a mixer will not be required!
There are many audio interfaces that can be connected using a USB or firewire cable. Some will even connect via the computer's audio input jack.
The most popular, lower priced choice is the M-Audio Fast Track US44010, which comes with its own recording software as well. It retails for about $80 on amazon.com

You can also get slightly more expensive USB audio devices that will allow you to connect several devices, control gain, etc. Check out the M-Audio line of devices.

Another option coming out this spring is an adapter from Shure that goes from xlr to usb. It looks very cool!

Or just out from Blue Icicle a similar product for about $50.

You can get a simple device that connects one XLR input to USB here: http://www.amazon.com/Blue-Microphones-Icicle-Conversion-Adapter/dp/B001EW5YQS/ref=tag_tdp_sv_edpp_i
You can also get slightly more expensive USB audio devices that will allow you to connect several devices, control gain, etc. Check out the M-Audio line of devices.

A mixer is a great option, but you can get by with two things... first you will need a transformer that will change the mike from low impedence to high impedence. It has two ends one that is a female xlr that hooks into the end of the mike cable and the other end is a 1/4" phone jack (like a guitar plug). Then you will need to have an adapter - Female 1/4" phone jack to male mini phone jack. This should allow you to plug into the microphone or aux input that you have on your laptop. http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2062443
