How can I calculate how much physical memory I need?

In other words What are the counters I use to detect physical memory constraints and how can I calculate how much physical memory I need?

The best thing to do is to add the max memory your computer can handle. It may be 1gb or 4gb....The more the merrier is what I usually say. And with memory being really cheap it would be a worthy upgrade...Because different programs use variable amounts of ram..
