I spent 2+ years using my overhead to rewrite our in-house web app mess from scratch. I was using our down time, so it was better than goofing around. The result was really good, and it is still sitting on the shelf 3+ years since I left the company. I don't think my replacement even knows how it works.
To this date my former boss claims we burned over a quarter million on it, but he won't acknowledge that the application was written during down time, not at the expense of billable work.
I also had projects that dried up right after launch. Not our problem, we delivered a full product, but the customer ran out of funds later, so my hard work is sitting idle.

This happens a lot in large companies or small / medium companies with poor planning and direction.
Wait for a few months and ask the company if you can continue development of the project on your own, outside of the company. Make sure that you have full ownership and rock it out.

Have you ever had a software project that was shelfed?
I had a distributed event tracking software written in VB shelfed because a hidden user thought MS Access application would be a better solution. The product was being demostrated, final reporting completed, and the product was shelfed. I felt blindsided. What is your experience with cool projects that didn't survive?

• If you could have release the product out in small useable components that communicated peer to peer through a loosely couple interface with a flexible standard, do you believe the software would be in use today?
