You are asking a lot of interesting questions.

Yes they can be used in this way. But tanks are used for this most of the time. Modern day calvary units are helicopter, tank or Motorized infantry units.

Calvarys main purpose is forward recon behind enemy lines. It's just how they get there and what kind of firepower they us thats different.

Helicopter calvary is more likely to flank the enemy lines, then to attack head on. Tanks are best for that. Helicopter calvary speed is more suited for hit and run or surprise attacks on ground forces. Also note that these are aircraft and can not hold ground or stay in the area long before they have to return to the airfield.

Iin modern warfare , attack helicopter are majorly use to give enemy "surprise attack" during the war just because due to the fact that it;s so easy to deploy .Secondary use as support fire for ground forces

What is your answer? Does an attack helicopter function like the Calvary by breaking a hole in enemy lines or flanking the line from the right or left?
