Lots of little maintenance things can help.
1. Defrag regularly
2. Make sure your hard drive has at least 15% free space, this helps with virtual memory - a full hard drive will slow your machine down.
3. Regularly run an anti-spyware/adware utility to get rid of any nasties that slow down the computer.
4. Run CCleaner (used to be called crap cleaner by Piriform) it gets rid of unwanted stuff in your registry and deletes references to unused extensions etc.
If all this fails you might want to consider upgrading your onboard memory or investing in a faster processor.
Hope this helps
