Does Apple know how to make a $599 laptop? Sure. The Mac Mini uses laptop parts and has sold for as little as $499.
Alternatively, take the $999 Macbook. Downgrade the processor tp an Atom, eliminate FireWire and the DVD burner, and shrink the screen from 13 inches to a typical netbook 9-10 inch size, and you have a machine which could sell for $599 without razor thin margins,
That having been said, I don't expect it. I expect an Apple netbook to be either a touch screen model in the $600-800 range, or a netbook at a lower price but with 3G built in, subsidized by a phone carrier, and requiring a phone contract.

Coming out with a netbook for $599 isn't any kind of bargain or eye opening feat. A full featured laptop is not a netbook and a netbook is not a laptop.
Here's another shock, that $999 (the lowest price Macbook) is way more than $599. Heck I walked through Wal Mart the other day and saw a *Toshiba* laptop (not netbook) with 17" screen for $400. It was even cheaper than the Dells and all other competitors. AAPL continues to lag behind in price. Not very recession-friendly.

• 3G and touch screen are worth $599. Compare this functionality the 1,800 dollar HP touch screen with slow response speeds. The netbook device will be amazing. Larger market share could be captured, if Apple drops the price to 300 dollars allowing High school and college students logical upgrades to their iPods.

No. The Mac Mini is a miniature desktop. Coming out with a netbook for $599 isn't any kind of bargain or eye opening feat. A full featured laptop is not a netbook and a netbook is not a laptop.
