Does anyone know if while moding my xbox 360 if i want the disk tray to show through the shell would i have to remove the dvd drive
i have a dark tinted shell with led's inside as well as various other mods, but i am not sure if i will have to remove the dvd drive for good to allow this.

No. All of the external covers are removable without touching the DVD drive itself. I replaced my DVD drive and I was not able to pull it out until all covers were off. The chromed tip that covers the front of the tray slides/snaps into place.
As for the LEDs in your new shell, I don't know if you will need to remove the drive in order to plug them in.
