Does anyone know a work around for the 5,000 limit on facebook friends? (...a friend is handling social media for a quasi-celeb)

You should contact Facebook and have them change the account to a Fan page. This will automatically move the friends over to the Fan page. Then they can recreate their facebook account and really use it as a facebook account instead of a fan page.

Correct... after you have a fan page the folks at Facebook will consider moving folk over. Or you can just put a note on your member page that says you've reached the limit and folks should move over to your fan page.
