On the contrary, I use my iPhone as an iPod touch. This iPhone is a hand-me-down from someone who purchased the iPhone 3G and didn't have any use for the old one. So I use this to do everything the iPod touch does.
I don't use skype on it though. I have a cell phone (with a far cheaper plan than the $80 or so the iPhone would charge) to make calls. I can't rely upon skype/wifi to make calls because I am not reliably around wifi hot spots enough. And my phone doesn't use bluetooth or wifi, so I can't create my own hotspot.

Do you use your iPod Touch as a phone?
16 million consumer have bought iPod touch. The iPod touch does not have a cell network but does come with WiFi. You can download Skype, Fring, or Truphone and use these apps to communicate over the internet. Skype paid subscription provides access to local and international calls.
If you have a cell phone, you can create a WiFi hotspot and iPod Touch as a phone where WiFi is not available.
Is iPod Touch a cheaper way to communicate than iPhone?

Yes, I use the Touch with Skype. I very rarely need a cell phone, and wi-fi is pretty much everywhere where I live, so that's not often an issue, and I can avoid the monthly charges. You can buy a Touch and a laptop for less than the iPhone plus the monthly charges. I don't own a cell phone at all.

Even if you're paying for Skype minutes, the ipod is still way cheaper. But obviously it's also a bit hamstrung, because it can only use data service when there's a wifi connection.
