A CPU is a processor chip, a core means that the chip may have more than one CPU inside. A dual core CPU is one chip with two CPUs within, quad core has four, etc. Single core is an oxymoron.

Why? Because there's a limit to how much we can shrink CPUs, but it means that the space that used to hold one CPU, can now hold 16. 16 CPUs working in parallel is better than one CPU.
