Yeah, I first started using Thunderbird back in 2004 when it was version 0.5 for Windows. It had a different name back then, although I don't remember what it was. The problem with Thunderbird is that it still doesn't feel like a Mac app, and it doesn't integrate well with Address Book and iCal. I use Thunderbird 3.0b3 on Windows, however. It's okay in a pinch, but I'd argue that Mail.app is still better.
I've used Eudora, Thunderbird, Entourage, and Mail.app on Mac OS X. IMO, Thunderbird, Entourage and Eudora aren't very good. I'm looking for something else -- something newer, more Mac-like, and as mature as Mail.app is. I don't know that I'm going to find anything for sure.
I did come across Postbox

I find it more friendly than the application that came with the MacBook.

Can someone recommend something better than Mail.app for managing email on Mac OS X? No Entourage, and Mailplane is specifically for Gmail.

Thunderbird is a very nice, cross platform email client. It has proven to be very robust and reliable. It has a large following and enhancements and bug fixes happen often.

Mail Steward is very powerful, It is overkill for what I need, but it has gotten very good reviews on podcasts, including MacBites recently. http://maczot.com/discuss/?p=477

I am using Thunderbird, which is a Firefox program. Works fine for me. I have been using it for about 6-8 months now. I find it more friendly than the application that came with the MacBook.
Try it out!
