Best free / cheap and best commercial audio editing / mixing software for the Mac?

For chopping up and remixing tracks...

Audacity is free and very powerful. I also paid $10 for lifetime use (w/free upgrades forever) for Amadeus. Amadeus is very useful, I haven't used Audacity since I paid for Amadeus first and it does everything I need, including splitting full-album mp3s into individual tracks, supports selecting one or both channels and setting them to fade in/out. Also it's author is very quick to reply with any problems you have. I once had a problem importing (opening) mp3 files that were over an hour long. He quickly fixed it and released an updated version within days.

garage band is great for composing and remixing, but isn't really setup to be an audio editor.

The best and cheap "commercial" audio editor is Pro Tools. You can get it a copy for free if you buy any of their hardware. (regular price is $149). I would look into getting Protools LE and an MBox combination.

If you ever have to take your project to a studio this is what most audio engineers use. I learned the hard way by starting out using Digital Performer (MOTU)

Audacity is a good open source audio editor (although it still crashes enough to make me crazy)

My main complaint with Pro Tools is that you have to use their hardware which is pretty expensive, but I the gap between the stability and features of Pro Tools and Audacity is still too big for me.

Pro Tools is NOT free and DOES NOT come with a new system. Pro Tools is outside the standard package of applications you get from Apple when you buy a new system. Shame on you for suggesting it was.
