Are netbooks powerful enough to hook directly to my TV and watch online shows (slingplayer, hulu, FOX) with decent quality?

Yes, as long as your netbook has a VGA port, then you can connect it to a display or HDTV. If you are not sure which port on your netbook is the VGA port, then refer to your manual, and it will show you.
If your television has a VGA port that looks like the one on your netbook, then you can connect it with a standard VGA cable to your television.

A VGA port is one way, but if your display has S-Video in then I would urge you to get a netbook with S-Video out. A quick check on Google shows Acer, Asus and Lenovo selling netbooks with S-Video out. HP probably has one too.
