Honestly though, if you load the file up in a program like cubase, garabeband or ableton, you'd be able to easily 'tell the difference' between wav file signatures from one song to the next. simply split wherever you see the difference and most to individual tracks and export each track individually. Voila.

One is mp3split:

This tries to do a lot of the work of finding the breaks for you. Unfortunately, it gets it wrong often enough that I stopped using it in preference to Audacity.
Audacity is a tools for doing all kinds of sound editing, and while it won't find breaks for you, it will show you the sound waveforms, which are often a great help in locating the breakpoints.

Application for splitting a podcast into individual songs?
Can anyone recommend an application for splitting a podcast into individual songs? I realize it's easy to split a podcast into fixed lengths, but what I'm looking for is something which attempts to break it up between songs based on its best guess of where one song ends and another one begins. It doesn't have to be perfect -- even if it gets it wrong 50% of the time it would be okay.
It would be great if it's available for Linux, but Windows or OS X are okay, too.

I've tried two apps for splitting up albums into songs. In my case they weren't podcasts, but captured from other media, like old cassette tapes. One is mp3split:
