I've personally have used the following free iPhone apps: Twitterific, Twitterfon, Nambu, and Fastweet

I have to say my favorite and most often used iPhone Twitter application is Twitterfon. Twitterfon is easy to use, has great search features, such as trends and your most frequent search terms.

Tweetie is generally considered to be the best but many people also like Tweetdeck, especialy if they use Tweetdeck on the desktop. Mashable has a nice comparison. http://mashable.com/2009/06/16/tweetdeck-vs-tweetie/. Tweetie costs, Tweetdeck is free.
