Atmospheric water harvesting is real. The two main techniques are condensation of water vapor on cooled surfaces and adsorption of water molecules by hygroscopic salts. Condensation requires high humidity to be cost-effective, but a new technique using a proprietary salt mixture is being used by the US military to provide a portable water supply for battlefield use. The company claims a net cost of about 30 cents per gallon (8 cents per liter).

The advantages of this system are portability and cost. Disadvantages include low yield (a 20-foot-long system can produce up to 600 gallons of water per day) and possible environmental effects of large-scale operation (would removing large amounts of water vapor from the atmosphere affect the weather?).
