2 married students file joint return. lifetime learning is claimed for one.tuition deduction for the other.ok?

Well I'm far from a tax expert, but from glossing over pages that seem at least somewhat relevant on NASFAA and IRS.gov, it sounds like you can. This from NASFAA:

Taxpayers may claim this deduction along with a Hope credit, a Lifetime
Learning credit, and an exclusion from gross income for certain
distributions from qualified state tuition programs or education IRAs,
if a different student is used for each deduction, credit, or exclusion
AND the family does not exceed the Lifetime Learning maximum per family.

Not sure if that's 100% relevant, though. Check it out for yourself at the below links, but the above kinda sounds to me like you can as long as you don't exceed either limit and you're talking about two individuals who are both students.

thanks. i found the same source later in the day. also, i realized that i had actually claimed both several years ago, claiming one for each of two children in college.
