The studies and polls that I found indicate that tattoos are basically equal when it comes to gender distribution. This represents a large change over the past few decades, and it wouldn't be surprising to see women passing men in incidence of tattoos in the future, based on the short amount of time it took them to catch up and the different reasons that males and females seem to have for getting tattoos.
Here are a few of the sources I located:
1. In a study of 400 college students, 25% of men and 28% of women reported having a tattoo.

2. A scholarly study stating that the genders are equally represented is found in "Journal of American Academy of Dermatology" September 2006

3. Harris poll# 58, October 8, 2003: equal (16% of all adult males, 15% of all adult females)

Also, (female) tattoos are way more acceptable nowadays, than they were a decade ago. For men, this is less the case, male tattoos are still often seen as for 'grunts'.
Even though I have no hard numbers, I too have the impression that female tattoos are way more popular now than male tattoos. I think the estimation of your local artist is pretty spot on, a lot of 'regular' girls I know are considering getting a small tattoo (shoulder, ankle or lower back), while I don't know of any male.

Men and women do get different types of tattoos tho. Alot of men are getting the arm sleeves now, and alot of women are getting them on their lower back and calf or ankle. Of course, every other area on the body is being tatted too. Most of the time they have meaning too. Here are a few of some really cool ones I have seen.
A friend sent me this. Sapposedly he really lost his arm to a shark.
This one is fake, but I kinda think it's cute, lol.

Answered Question

Mahalo is adding a tip to all questions that don't offer a tip.
Who has more tattoos - males or females?
As in the percentage of males or females that have tattoos... which is greater?
Last time I chatted with my artist, he mentioned about 70% of his clients are females.. I found this a little odd. Is this the case everywhere, or is his shop out of the ordinary?

The main difference between men and women is the type of tattoo. Men prefer big, masculine tattoos, while women prefer smaller, more intimate tattoos. Also, (female) tattoos are way more acceptable nowadays, than they were a decade ago. For men, this is less the case, male tattoos are still often seen as for 'grunts'.

I love tattoos and I am even a facebook fan of tattoos. So many people have tattoos now days that I would have to say there are probably just as many women with tattoos as there are men. The only people I know that don't have tattoos are much older than me or they are children. Men and women do get different types of tattoos tho. Alot of men are getting the arm sleeves now, and alot of women are getting them on their lower back and calf or ankle. Of course, every other area on the body is being tatted too.
