How do you get to be in the audience for a taping of late night talk shows?

I live in NY and wanted to go one day with my dad to be in the audience of one of the late night show (not any specific one, we watch most of them). How do I go about getting in the audience?

For Lateshow with David Letterman
Slow way:
Submit your request online using our Online Ticket Form

Last minute:
Stand-by tickets are available by calling (212) 247-6497 starting at 11:00 a.m. on the day of the taping you wish to attend. Your name will be taken and you will be placed on our stand by list in the order we receive your call. You will be asked to check in to the theater at a specific time approximately 1 hour before the taping.

For the David Letterman show:
1.) Submit your request online using our Online Ticket Form
or
2.) Visit the theater during specified hours and submit an In-Person Request
or
3.) For a limited time, we are accepting requests for Group Tickets
