Well, it depends on whether you want to win, or just make it through the .5 mile without drowning. Freestyle is your best competitive bet, but if you're afraid you can't handle that, side stroke would be the best way to conserve your energy.

What is the easiest swimming stroke for swimming in open water?
My friends want me sign up for a Triathlon, but my swimming skills have a lot to be desired. Any suggestions what stroke is best for swimming .5 miles in open water (besides just renting a Skeedoo). Ty

Thank you. I'm more of a "omg, I don't want to die" than a "I want to win the race" sort of swimmer. Side stroke sounds great!
