The first reports were unclear, but Steve Larsen died of a heart attack due to coronary artery disease, not from a virus. The initial autopsy was inconclusive, and Larsen's heart was sent to another laboratory for further analysis.
While a heart attack at age 39 is unusual, it's important to note that Larsen's father has chronic heart disease. This can be hereditary, and physical fitness may not be able to compensate if the cause is (for example) a gene which causes increased plaque formation in the coronary arteries.
