Was it too soon for Jennifer Hudson to perform in public after the death of her family?

I think that this is a positive thing, based on a few observations:

First, she appeared to become more confident and joyful about doing what she loves as the song went on.

She didn't butcher the song beyond recognition. She made it her own without completely altering it. Could be likened to her accepting the past while taking control of her present and future.

Finally, just showing up is an important step in her healing process.

I don't think so. I thought about her tragedy during her performance, and I found it admirable that she would be able to put herself on such a public stage so soon. She is evidently a very strong woman and a true performer.

No. It was good for her to get out in public again. She seemed very emotional though.

Personally I think it was, But I'm sure she was booked for the superbowl before the tragic event that happened.  My thoughts are with her and her family.
