I love this one:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-iXos-z_yFY

Without giving it away, it's just so unexpected, and the message at the end is exactly conveyed by the commercial.  No way are you going to forget the point of this commercial!

This is part of an entire advertising campaign with the same message.  In each one, a perfectly reasonable thing happens, until something goes wrong, and someone walks in on it at exactly the wrong time.  We all have had days similar to this: the dog that escapes the bathtub; the cat that ruins dinner; having someone overhear our cell phone conversation.  We can relate.  Only most of us don't have the horrible luck shown in these commercials!

"1984" was _the_ benchmark Superbowl ad. There have been other great ads, but none that defined the blockbuster Superbowl ad the way this one did.

I like Dove's commercials, and how they portray our perception of beauty is distorted when we look at man advertisements that have been graphically enhanced. The first one is very interesting, and I like how it goes from slow, and gradually speeds up the film to show you what goes into putting makeup on the model, and then the ad is still not done when the image is graphically manipulated. It's also interesting because it's advertisement showing some criticism to the advertising industry, while it proves another point, which is our perception on real beauty. The ad tells us not to believe advertising or everything we see on a billboard. Look at the woman before and after, it's simply amazing how the woman in the billboard is a completely different looking person. It's interesting to teach people when you look at any billboard ad, it's always touched up by a graphic artist, and portrays an unobtainable beauty standard for women. Likewise, the second is very interesting because it tells the same message to young girls by showing them it's okay to be different and be beautiful. Listen carefully, as both have great music in the background. These commercials dispel the thought that Superbowl Commercials always need to be funny, as both are very serious commercials, yet they state a very important point, that not everything is as it seems.

These two prove that humor isn't necessary to make a great Super Bowl commercial, that it does not need to sell an alcoholic beverage, or something provocative to be meaningful or thought provoking.

The Apple ad was great, but I'm personally a huge fan of the EDS 'Cat Herding' commercial:

I'd have to say from 2004:
Bud Light® Wardrobe Malfunction 2004
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V9huV0otROs

I just thought it was hilarious for incorporating a "screw-up" from a previous superbowl into a commercial in the next...rather creative and a bit brave...

BudBowl, because it was a natural and funny take-off on the program viewers were watching, and it was able to last for a series of years. It was simple, kinda silly, but memorable and engaging, which is what marketers want.

The best Superbowl Commercial ever is the Budweiser commercial Where the guys fly out to the local store to pick up some beer and other necessities such as Toilet Paper. Gets up to the register to pay and didn't bring enough cash... quick decisive moment follows, when they decide to keep the beer forget the TP

Hey Jason. This question is very similar to an earlier one.  I'm linking to in my sources.  Here's my same answer...

Hands down, it was the commercial introducing the Apple Macintosh back in 1984 with its references to George Orwell's 1984.

Since emmylou provided the same YouTube link, I won't put it here.

The Audi R8 commercial that borrowed from The Godfather. Never have I wanted a car so bad that was so far out of my price range.

E*Trade wasting $2 million dollars.  You would think these companies would use that money a little more wisely. But hey, it's the Superbowl and you have to splurge every now and then. Monkeys are always a hit in commercials.

If I think back on Super Bowls, only two really stick out:  the Apple 1984 and the "herding cats".

The beer ones are so similar they merge together.

Reebok - Terry Tate, office linebacker.

For the week after the Super Bowl the only thing my friends and I did in class were watch all the Terry Tate commercials over and over again.

2002. Budweiser Clydesdale Team paying respects to NYC post 9-11. I was on USS George Washington (CVN-73) at the time. We were floating off NY on 9-12. It's not the funniest or most witty superbowl ad ever, but it still makes me cry.

I think the best super bowl commercial of all time is the "swear jar". It was found too controversial to be aired, but it is definitely the funniest.
