Suggestions: I have a nikon d40, use it for traveling and landscape photography.
I want to know what everyone thinks are some essential items to buy for the camera such as...
GPS
Bags
Tripods
Filters
Lenses
etc.
Please include a location where I can find these items for good prices. Pictures would help a lot.

If you're going to travel and do landscape photography, you're going to need a few things that will make it easier for you to both protect your gear and take great pictures.
First, I'd put a UV filter on each lens, because this protects the lens without interfering with photo quality.
If I were you, I'd also go ahead and grab a tripod. That way, your setup is as stable as possible for the landscape shots - and you could even get some pretty-good time-exposure photography, too.
Also, get a good bag, because you're going to want to protect your gear from bumps, scratches, et cetera. I like backpacks, myself, because the ones that are designed for digital cameras have room for extra memory cards, and even laptops with some designs. Backpacks are also easy to carry around.
I haven't given you any specific recommendations because those are entirely matters of your own budget and your preferences. All of the links in this answer go back to Wolf Camera and Image, because they tend to have really-good prices, and they're a trustworthy Web site. They also tend to have decent sales - currently running one for Mother's Day, in fact.
