Starbucks Value Menu, is this a good idea and will it make you go there more?

Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

The Starbucks value menu is a great idea, but I doubt it will make me go there more. From an economic standpoint there is little they can do that would make sense to me. You're still paying $4 for half a sandwich and some coffee. At home you can get that for less than a dollar. The value menu may get some people who are on the fence, but for the people that have already worked their way out of going to Starbucks it's probably not going to get them to come back. Starbucks is still way overpriced by most measures. They do have good food and good coffee, but in these down economic times people are going to be willing to settle for cheaper good enough options.

The only way Starbucks is going to get ahead is by closing all the stores that aren't earning a bunch of money, and hunkering down until the end of the recession. At this point they kind of just need to stop the bleeding. They're feeling the effects of the economy and years of bad PR railing against the overpriced cup of coffee.

I'm indifferent towards the value menu. It won't change the rate at which I go to Starbucks, mostly because I rarely buy desserts or sandwiches on the go, so this doesn't affect my coffee consumption. It may sway a small number of people who regularly get a coffee and snack somewhere close to a Starbucks and now have more options within their price range.

Maybe it's me, but a value meal at Starbucks just sounds odd. The words "Starbucks" and "Value Meal" just don't look right together. It'd be like seeing "McDonald's" and "New York Strip" next to each other.

But, to answer the question, It definitely won't inspire me to go to Starbucks any more than the one or two times a year I go. It's not because of the ridiculousness of it all, but because I think their regular coffee tastes awful compared to Dunkin' Donuts or Tim Horton's, both of which are open similar hours. If I'm going to Starbucks, I'm going there for a frou frou drink and those aren't going to be on the Value Menu.

I don't know if I'll go there more often - they're the default stop in the early mornings when I have to work in Sacramento because they're open before 6:30, when I get to work. I'd have to work in Sacto more often, which probably won't happen.
BUT I may spend a bit more in the mornings when I forget my breakfast. Less than $4 for my coffee and a sandwich is on a par with the occasional bagel (also purchased with my morning joe). That will be more attractive than the emergency ramen noodles!
They were offering breakfast sandwiches a little over a year ago, so I trust they've worked out the cost/benefit. As a purchaser, I'd say it won't bring in much more than $5 per month from me.
