Star Trek.

Trek is hit or miss, and more miss than hit.

Consider these episodes - and a note here for those of you who see Trek as purely idealized:

DS9 -
In the Pale Moonlight - Sisko had Garak try to help get the Romulans to join the war against the Dominion by any means possible. Garak's initial gambit failed (It was a faked conference or somesuch), and he ends up murdering the Romulan. Sisko is extremely angry and conflicted over this.

TNG -
Darmok - Picard and other alien beam down on to the surface of a planet to face an enemy. The alien speaks in convoluted metaphor and Picard struggles to understand. It's very well done, very subtle, and I can't think of anything comparable.

The Inner Light -
Oh. look. Alien Probe! Picard drops to floor. Picard wakes up and lives a lifetime in the aliens' world, and becomes the sole guardian of the memory of their existence afterward.

The Measure of a Man - Riker is forced to act as "prosecutor" against Data being considered a living being when some guy from starfleet wants to do some potentially dangerous experiments.

Star Trek, at its best, isn't a science fiction show. It's a show about the human condition. What it is to be human, what greatness can be acheived, and sometimes about the inner struggles of morality behind it. Some of the episodes take on some heavy topics and treat them with amazing respect. Forget that they are on a starship, shooting phasers and photon torpedoes at other ships. That's not what it was ever about, it was not Roddenbury's dream.

Star Trek, at its worst, is campy sci-fi. A lot of it sucks, particularly the newer series, but there have even been a decent handful of absolutely fantastic Voyager episodes.

It's not about science, not special effects, not even about specific plots. When Star Trek is at its best, it's philosophical interpretation of humanity.

We've all seen all the Star Wars movies and the Star Trek movies (of which most were frankly not good). Star Wars may compare favorably to the Trek movies as a whole, but there are probably thirty or forty episodes of Trek (From all the series combined) where the show becomes what it was truly intended to be, and is far greater than the sum of the rest of the material combined.

I knew the shows, had to google to find the names of them. One wouldn't be surprised to know that I've seen most of the episodes of most of the series (2/3 of TOS, 99% of TNG, 1/2 or so of DS9, maybe 1/5 of Voyager, and 3 episodes of Enterprise).

A couple more really good ones -

The Offspring - Data makes a new android, and fails in the end. Just thinking back to it makes me tingle a little bit.

Here's a synopsis.
http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/The_Offspring_(episode)

If you haven't seen this stuff, and have glossed over Trek because of the piles of crap that surround these gems, you're missing out on some very good stuff. The absolute best was in TNG, where they hit on themes like these. DS9 was in actuality probably the best overall series, but it hit less home runs than TNG did. TOS had its moments, but was mostly campy stuff. Voyager was too inconsistent, but there were several gems to come out of it, too.

I think the bottom line is when you have 700+ episodes of a series of series, you're going to get some good material, but I'll maintain that when Trek is good, it's as good as it gets, period.

teff: That's quite a compilation of Star Trek episodes - and from a variety of series, too. I'm impressed.

I am a die hard Star Trek fan; however, I love Star Wars a lot.

I think this question has been asked a lot of different ways and answered the same way... The problem with this question is that they are both on a different playing field. Star Wars was and is a world wide phenomenon and being a movie it got a larger fan base than Star Trek; however, if you as a die hard Star Trek fan they will say it got more fan appeal that Star Wars due to the fact that it/was on a TV and see by more people daily than Star Wars.

Either way, I am a fan of both equally and so my answer is both.

Yep. Personally I'm a Star Trek fan having grown up in the 60s and watching the TV series.

Star Wars, simply because even though it is more unrealistic as to "Long Time Ago, Far Away", it is still more reasonable than Star Trek's belief that the way of peace is inevitable for mankind. Star Wars assumes that man is both good and evil, while Star Trek says that man will evolve into good. Also, aren't Han Solo and Luke Skywalker more entertaining than Captain Kirk and Mr Spock?

Oh, WHY are you making me think this hard this close to Christmas, LOL?

I cut my teeth on Star Trek, so I have a strong connection to that. And that franchise goes on, and on, and on...through several series and movies for each series.

However, the special effects for Star Wars are so much better; the story line has more twists and turns and depth, usually. No series (unless you count Clone Wars). And always the remote possibility that Lucas will miss it and give us the others in the series...

It's a draw.

And what about Star GATE? LOL Definitely the most self-deprecating.

StarTrek without a doubt.

The ideal of Gene Roddenberry will forever be burned into our hearts and minds for centuries to come.

To seek out new life and new civilizations.
To Boldly go where no man has gone before.

This man had a true vision of what it would be like centuries from now. If first contact with another intelligent race where to ever come to light. There would be no more WARS, there would be STARVATION, there would be only a united cause to reach further into the black void that we call space.

I think it was JFK who said it best.

"The eye of world now looks to space."

xds - I thank you for your sanguine outlook on our future. (I just hope we make it out of this recession very soon.)

It's not a recession bud, its a global depression.
(I'm sorry, Call it what it is.)

But I'll tell you this, the worlds spirit is stronger now than it has ever been. We just all need to pull together.
All in all I am sure we will be just fine.
There is just to much speculation going on.
People "crying havoc" and such.
Brush it off and tell them to get a job where they get their hands dirty.
