The Next 10 Actual, Official LSAT PrepTest series seems like a great choice because it contains real LSAT questions. From an amazon reviewer:

As a professional LSAT tutor/blogger, I find that many LSAT books out there choose to make up their own questions rather than pay the licensing fee to the Law School Admissions Council to use real questions. However, this practice leaves students woefully unprepared. I can't emphasize enough how important it is to study from REAL LSAT questions, which are exactly what this book provides. I recommend this book to all of my students.

That is the most recent, but there are also several more in the same series. They can all be found here:

Another seemingly good choice would be The Official LSAT SuperPrep. It is recommended for use at the beginning of preparation.

I am always recommending princeton review books for the math portions of any test. I have never tutored for the other portions, but my students' reviews of the other sections is that they are far above the competition.

Never, ever, ever get REA, no matter what special features they have, like extra tests or cheap prices. They are never any good, no matter what the test is.

I'm sorry you can't afford the Kaplan course, it really helped my score. If you are interested in some gently used books I'd be happy to send them for the cost of shipping.

Study books aside, the best piece of strategy/advice I got before the LSAT was that it is different than most other multiple choice tests. You don't need to find the best answer, you need to find the right answer. I remember the SAT being annoying because multiple answers looked good. For the LSAT you need to convince yourself that there is only one right answer and that something about each of the others actually makes them wrong and not just inferior choices.

Any LSAT guide that provides previously used questions will help get you familiar with the exam format. As $$$ is an issue use www.amazon.com to see if you can find a used copy of one.

Your typical LSAT guide really isn't enough. What I recommend is purchasing a couple Logic Games books by Dell (not the computer manufacturer) and a book on speed reading. Just as you are doing here, use Amazon's wisdom of the crowd to find the right speed reading book.

I found books of logic games to be extremely helpful while preparing for the LSAT and the result of this approach was an increase of 8 points over what I made on the first test.

The purpose of any LSAT study guide is to give you a feeling for the format of the test. Sticking strictly to former test questions will not help you as much as adding the two other sources mentioned here. I say that because logic games will prepare you to think in the way required on the LSAT. Rather than starting off with the hard questions (the ones you will see on the LSAT) a logic games book will give you several levels of questions so you can start easy and train your brain to be able to better answer the LSAT questions.

A speed reading book is essential because, unless you naturally read fast, most LSAT test takers do not complete all of the reading portions with time to properly answer the associated questions. By training yourself to read faster and comprehend more you will give yourself a significant edge over your fellow test takers.

I hope you find these tips helpful and give you a way to successfully navigate the LSAT exam.

How To Choose an LSAT Study Guide----

A study guide can help you tailor your strategy for the test and improve efficiency. But with all the various titles on the market, how do you know which one to select? Which study guide is best for you? Take this list to the bookstore:

Choose three to five guides from the shelves. Don't over-think it - you'll be looking at all contenders eventually - but merely take the first five titles on the shelf. If there are only three titles available, put them all back and pick another store with more variety!
Take the first set to a table and spread them out before you (or sit on the floor). Flip all titles open to the table of contents. Does one title cover more material than another? Are the contents of each logically laid out, or do the chapters skip from test-taking strategies to specific how-to sections to sample questions and back again? Does each guide cover each of the sections on the LSAT as well as strategies and practice tests (most important)? Which organization makes the most sense to you, the reader?

Count the number of practice tests in the book, or sample sections. Which book offers more opportunities to test your approach?

Flip open to a random chapter in the first title, then select a similar chapter in each of the remaining titles (example: the chapter on "The Analytical Reasoning Section"). Read the first paragraph of each chapter. Which one conveys the material most clearly?

Given these three factors - the table of contents, the number of practice tests or sample questions, and the quality of the writing - which title leads the rest? Keep that one out, and put the rest aside.

Go back to the shelves, and pick out another two to four titles. Repeat the process with this group, but this time, compare the winner from this group with the winner from the first group, and select the better of those two titles. Put the rest back.

Repeat until you have gone through each of the study guides available.

Purchase your winning title.

Go home and start working!
