Because they think he's a great goaltender perhaps who they want to keep for the remainder of his career? His save percentage is 92% for his career and his goals against average is 2.57, both impressive numbers. Remember Dominik Hasek played in the NHL through the 2007-2008 season and that season, at the age of 43, had a goals against average of 2.14 and a save percentage of 90%. So Luongo could perhaps finish out the contract and retire at the age of 42, still a very effective goaltender.
