The Badwater ultramarathon is held in Death Valley. It is 135 miles long and has a cumulative elevation gain of 13 thousand feet throughout the course. It is held every July, when temperatures are regularly above 120F. The pavement is apparently so hot that at the runners have to run on the white lines on the side of the road because the black asphalt is so hot it will melt the rubber soles of the shoes. So far there has never been a death in this ultramarathon (most likely due to the massive amount of precautions they take and how incredibly fit every runner is).
There is also the Death Valley Trail Marathon & 30K, though I couldn't find any statistics on that (I would tend to guess very few, if any deaths, in this as well)

In terms of deaths - probably quite a few, but I would guess modern events have extensive health support, e.g. lots of people with bottled water along the way!

• Is there an website, where viewers can watch the race?
How hot will the asphalt get? I've heard temperatures of 200 degrees F, but that is hot enough to roast a steak.
I think the badwater race is equivalent to climbing everest.
Did you find how many contestants will run the race?

You can do a search for videos of it on youtube (just search badwater race) and that will give you clips, but i don't know of any spot where you can just watch the whole thing. I don't actually know how hot the asphalt gets, I just knew the black part would get so hot it would melt rubber shoe soles because of a video about Dean Karnazes I saw sometime last year on yahoo (he talked about having to run on the white line on the side of the road). You can check out the website for the race at http://www.badwater.com/results/index.html and it has a whole list of the runners each year (looks like 40-85 runners do it and complete it each year). But yes, definitely equivalent to climbing Everest, except hot instead of cold ;-)
