Hockey is the most underated sport of them all.

Skillwise it is the most intensive, you need stamina, stregth, and grace all while on skates. Then on top of that you use a stick, to hit a 1 inch (25 mm) thick, 3 inches (76 mm) in diameter, and weighs between 5.5 and 6 ounces (160 and 170 g) piece of vulcanized frozen rubber. Past a guy wearing 30+ pounds of padding. Ohh yeah while you wear +20lbs of padding yourself.

For pay scale here are some averages:

http://content.usatoday.com/sports/hockey/nhl/salaries/mediansalaries.aspx?year=2008-09

I think the main reason people don't apreciate it is because its not a sport that just anyone can play. Ice rinks and equipment make it an unaccesible and expensive sport to play. When I played in high school equipment cost me around $1000 dollars; goalies would spend more like $2000-$3000. Each player was responisible for thier own equipment unlinke football. Plus you really needed to sharpen skates once a week and that would cost around $8.00.

When I really want someone to get into hockey I bring them to a game. More often than not they want to go back. Some people I have brought to games purchase season tickets now and I get to go with them every once in a while (bonus). The NHL is currently doing a good job of bringin more fans in speeding up the pace of the game and marketing it correctly for once. There are a lot of teams out there that bring people in with ticket package deals and promotions too.

This has really got to be opinion - I think since Football is the ultimate sport that it would be the most underrated, since not everyone's playing it. Every person's job is vital to the game. If one person decides to run a little slower or block a little lighter, the team is disrupted. It pits the strongest force exertable (through officiated observance) against the next strongest force exertable by people, while still ensuring strategy is paramount. You have to be clever, as well.
Now in America, I can probably say that football has reached saturation, and that many people think it's overrated. Here alone I'd say Rugby would be the most underrated. It's very similar to football but far fewer people play it.

I am in the US and a huge football Fan. Where are you from? What team(s) do you like?

I have been thinking about getting into Rugby, do you know of any sites where I can watch matches or replays?

I'm from Pennsylvania, originally. Favorite teams are the Broncos and Eagles, I really hoped Broncos would go undefeated this year.
As for Rugby, there are a few sites you can check out. Justin.tv should play live games and you can catch a few reruns on BBC's Iplayer.

Soccer
Soccer players have a base salary of $50,000
It so great because this sport provides opportunity for every kid regardless of their size.It really builds a child self esteem. Most people don't think soccer is a legitimate sport that why it is not appreciated in America.I will make soccer a requirement in every school and also promote the sport in Colleges just like they do with basketball.

I don't think soccer is under-rated because it is the most played sport in the world, even up here in Canada where hockey is king, soccer is the most played. Over 200 countries have official soccer clubs. FIFA alone represents over 260 Million soccer players.

Most under rated sport:

Competitive waterskiing. It takes dedicated training to learn the jumping, trick skiing and salome categories to compete. The good thing is that you do not have to compete in all categories, but to do so will give you opportunities to capture over all ranking. The sport is international, but seldom televised. Some colleges have now added this to their athletic program.

Like ice hockey, not all have the same opportunities to experience the sport, as it entails equipment more than yourself. (Boat, Skiis and a body of water near by)

Try it if you get a chance, it is not your weekend skier moving back and forth behind a boat.

Out of the big four I would say Hockey purely because it gets the least amount of play as far as North America goes but gets huge ratings in canada and europe. I have stats but I am not sure if thats where you want the answer to go. If your talking about other sports outside of the big 4 the hardest in terms of stamina is between swimming or wrestling as they are full body workouts that count on (in most cases) one individual who has the be in the utmost shape and works all of their muscles to show that they are the best.
