Lateral .. Official review
Per the instant replay rules, a booth review was called. The play was reviewed by referee Phil Luckett since it was uncertain if the ball had been a forward pass, which is illegal on a kickoff return. After a long official review, the ruling on the field was upheld as a touchdown, and the Titans won the game 22-16.
Later, computer analysis confirmed that Dyson caught the ball on the same yard marker that Wycheck threw it from, confirming the play was indeed a lateral.
The Music City Miracle is one of the most famous plays in the history of the NFL. It occurred at the end of the Wild Card Playoff game between the Tennessee Titans and Buffalo Bills on January 8, 2000 (following the 1999 regular season) at (what was then) Adelphia Coliseum in Nashville, Tennessee.

I think that people believe it was a forward pass because they fail to understand that the rule only concerns the location of the ball and not of the player, and in the video it is obvious that Dyson went backwards to grab the ball and that the ball did not cross the yard marker from where Wycheck threw it from.

Was the "Music City Miracle" a forward or a backward pass?
On January 6th, 1999, the Titans faced the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Wild Card playoff game. The Bills made a 41-yard field goal to put them up 16-15 with 16 seconds left in the game. The Titans received the kick-off to Loranzo Neal, who handed it off to Frank Wycheck. Wycheck went right, turned, and passed a lateral across the field to Kevin Dyson, who returned it 75 yards to the end zone with 3 seconds remaining. The play was reviewed (this being the first year a Coach's Challenge, or a review, was used) and the play stood: it was a lateral, not a forward pass. The Titans won the game and later advanced to the Super Bowl for the first time, thus giving the name of the play the "Music City Miracle". However, people still debate that the pass was indeed a forward pass (illegal in NFL rules). So what do you think? Did Frank Wycheck pass the ball forward or did Dyson receive the ball backwards? (a.k.a. It's not where the body is; it's where the ball is from beginning to end).

It was definitely a lateral. A lateral does not have to be a pass that is backward it can be a real lateral and that is what i believe this was. I wholeheartedly believe this and will stand behind it, a completely legal play (I'm a Titans fan :)) I think that people believe it was a forward pass because they fail to understand that the rule only concerns the location of the ball and not of the player, and in the video it is obvious that Dyson went backwards to grab the ball and that the ball did not cross the yard marker from where Wycheck threw it from.
