I'm believing this is false. I have checked numerous sites and none mention anything about this. The only reason I have found as to why there hasn't been football at USF until 1997 is... (directly from the source http://www.sportsfrog.com/2007/10/16/usf-football-history/)

The legend says that USF didn't have a football team until 97 b/c the woman who donated the campus had lost a son to a football injury. TorF
The land was donated with the stipulation that USF not field a football team during the donor's lifetime. But when she eventually died, they were able to proceed with a football program. Is this true?
