It's hard to compare rivalries across sports. It is no doubt the biggest college football rivalry (though those participating in other rivalries may disagree). Especially so when you see how big the stadiums are (over 100,000 screaming fans at the Big House hating on OSU is a sight to see). But if you go to Cameron Indoor Stadium to watch the Duke-UNC basketball rivalry, you'd be amazed. Same thing with the Yankees-Red Sox.

It obviously depends on your definition of WORLD. How can it be the World's biggest rivalry if they belong to the same country.

I'd say the hype is warranted. In 2000, ESPN selected the Michigan-Ohio State rivalry as the top sports rivalry of the century.
