"Roberto Luongo (born April 4, 1979) is a Canadian professional ice hockey goaltender and team captain of the Vancouver Canucks of the National Hockey League (NHL). He is the first NHL goaltender to be named team captain since Bill Durnan in 1947–48,1 and is considered one of the premier goaltenders in the league.2 Luongo previously played for the New York Islanders and the Florida Panther" (information obtain from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roberto_Luongo)
Yes the 12 year deal is a really good deal for the Canucks. If you do the maths you would be paying Luongo only 5.3 mil every year for his services to protect the goal. Luongo who is only 30 years old is the ideal candidatethat will make a valubale contribution to the team. It is stated the peak years for a professional players is between the ages of 22 and 34. (please select the link to see the full article http://www.thephysicsofhockey.com/documents/fitness.pdf). Unlike Brett Farve and the Vikings The Canucks can count on Luongo in the next 6-10 years to reach his peak of the game. He is still young have a lot of experience, talented and will provide the team with composure in the back to close out games. If you check his stats it is great once there is no major injuries to this goalie other teams will find it hard beating the Canucks (please check the site to see stats on Luongo http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/players/profile?playerId=551). Not only his statistics for the game speaks volumes but he is also a strong leader "He is the first NHL goaltender to be named team captain since Bill Durnan in 1947–48," so the team should have no problems with him understand his role and duties in the team. This is a very positive contract for the team 1. they have secured the services of a very talented player and one of the best in the league with strong leadership skills. 2. The amount paid for one of the top goalies is a fair one $5.333 for the next 12 years and as we know a contract can be changed or altered due to the performance of the player. 3. Unlike Brett Farve this guy still have a lot years in which he can contribute to the team so time is definitely on his side 4. You invest in something with the hope it will be a success for you to get good gains. Good deal probably will allow the team to challenge for the cup.

Yes it's a great deal, he gave them room to get other stars as he took a year over year pay cut and he has proven that he is not injury prone so sewing up one of the best Canadian goaltenders to play for a contending Canadian team is an excellent decision. He will be Team Canada's starting goaltender for the foreseeable future as well so that is an extra bonus.
