The most important fact is going with someone who has patience and knowledge about the sport. If you have previous experience with balancing sports/board sports (snowboarding, surfing, skateboarding, skiing... etc) its much easier to get the hang of it. Also, having previous experiences being pulled behind a boat is key. Many people try to fight the boat, but instead you need to let it pull you, but you must stay in control.
step 1) Sit with your knees bent with the rope in front of you.
2) keep the board out of water and hold on to the rope when the boat starts
3) As the boat pulls you out of the water, allow your body to turn (left foot forward or goofy ie right foot forward).
The main thing i notice with beginners is that they easily let go of the rope. There is a lot of resistance and its key to not let go of the rope.
