I don't think that Chris Wells right now would be an upgrade over Edgerrin James in his prime. However, as we have seen in the past few years, Edgerrin James is no longer near his prime.
Edge has fewer yards per carry, and he's getting fewer carries as he is getting older. Coach Wisenhunt can't use him as an every down back anymore, because his body just can't handle it. So putting Wells in instead will give them more of a ground game.

Disagree. The Cards line was pathetic the first 2 years there for Edge. Last year there was some improvement so his #s rose. With Warner staying hot the running game should remain at least as effective as it was at the end of the season, but that largely was due to the skillset of Edge making the most of very little. His future in the NFL sadly is doubtful not because of wear and tear but due to his wife's death. It would be hard to imagine him playing again unless he gets alot of help with his kids, although at season's end he could surface in a Terry Allen like capacity for a contender with injuries in the backfield.

I don't know about a big upgrade, but Edgerrin James is nearing the end of his career. It stands to reason that a younger player has a chance of outshining him at this time.
