No way. Howard is a dominant player. Here are my arguments.
1. There are very few players who consistently hit so many home runs. Moreover, he is streaky enough to carry a team.
2. Howard's strikeouts with nobody on base are irrelevant. The only ones that matter are the rally-killers. Since Howard has so many RBIs, the rally-killers are uncommon.
3. Simply having Howard in the lineup makes other RBI producers that much more useful. Clearly, Utley has benefited tremendously from Howard's presence.
4. Howard's defense is average. His ability to stretch is very good, but his arm is mediocre.
5. Who is a better first baseman, especially in the National League?

Despite hitting 40+ home runs a year, Ryan Howard plays mediocre defense, strikes out 200 times a year. Anyone else think he's overrated?
I'm a Phillies fan for over 30 years, but I think he's too 1 dimensional. I've seen him many times fail to drive in the run because of striking out where a fly ball or ground ball would do it. Also, seen way too many bad throws from first base. Yes he's won his share with home runs and not thinking he's a bad player, just not as great as sometimes people make him out to be.

I agree with the fact that others in the lineup are better with him in there, I just think of how great Howard could be if he didn't strike out so much. No reason for a major league player to strikeout 200 times a season, hit the ball and he'd be well over a .300 hitter and probably hit 50-60 home runs a season, wouldn't that be better than .250-.260 with 40 home runs? To answer question 5, Albert Pujols is the best first baseman in baseball and yes, he's actually good defensively too. I like Howard but he frustrated me to no end at times.
