You can do this by using a combination of Twitter and Friendfeed. Get your updates ("tweets") via Friendfeed where you only add the Twitters you really want to follow, or alternatively add all your Twitter contacts, but put them in groups and only follow the group you want to.

You can do this by using Twitter with Tweetdeck or Seesmic Desktop, or as about you can use Friendfeed to do this as well. You can receive your tweet via these other services. Once you use these services, then you can do other things.
