No. At the time he came to the Galaxy, the English wanted him gone from the national team. He thought his international career was over, and the money and the new challenge of the American market looked attractive. Unfortunately he was injured when he first came to LA, and made it worse by trying to play through the injury, which ruined his first season.
When he had a chance to play for his national team, and maybe in another World Cup, he was absolutely right to play for AC Milan in the offseason.
Where he should be criticized is in staying long enough to miss half of the Galaxy's season this year. He should have either played the full season or been sold to AC Milan.
Disgrace to England? No. He has treated England far better than England has treated him (and I haven't even mentioned the obscene chants about his wife).
