Why was "Under God" added to the Pledge of Allegiance

Today in History in 1945 the Pledge of Allegiance was recognized by congress as it had been written by Francis Bellamy in 1892. Suddenly in 1954 Dwight D. Eisenhower ordered "Under God" to be snugged in there, how did this happen?
