Scientology is a set of beliefs and practices based around the writings of science-fiction author and philosopher L. Ron Hubbard. The Church of Scientology teaches, essentially, that people's minds are clouded and that they are not mentally connected to their true nature, which inhibits their real potential. Employing the Church's teachings, sometimes referred to as "tech," will purge follower's souls (referred to as "thetans"), allowing them to be happier and more successful.

For a more negative take, here's a clip from the BBC Show "Panorama" that takes a critical look:

Finally, I highly recommend reading this very thorough Rolling Stone piece:

I had a conversation with one of these friends and I asked them to frankly explain to me if Scientology was a religion or a self-help program. He said clearly it's a self-help program.
Many of the techniques they are using are basically psychology and they use it to help people get control of their lives and get through issues from the past.
So, from where I sit, it's a self-help program disguised as a religion. It might be spiritual to some folks, but many probably see it as just a way to perform better and deal with problems/challenges in their life.

I have a number of high-profile friends who ware in Scientology. They are very normal, in fact successful folks. They are the furthest thing from crazy or extreme in fact. However, when you hear all these horrible stories about Scientology it's hard to reconcile. I had a conversation with one of these friends and I asked them to frankly explain to me if Scientology was a religion or a self-help program. He said clearly it's a self-help program.
