I believe, in general (and you can't get more general than "Christianity" since there are so many different flavors), Christians believe that salvation is only achieved through accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior. Be it Jew, Muslim or Atheist, if you don't accept, you ain't going through the Pearly Gates.

But this is a REALLY general question... There are different flavors of Christians just as there are different flavors of Judaism. (My favorite is Chocolate Swirl.)

Hi drmatt,
I believe you are more right than you know!
As a Muslim, I know that belief in Jesus as a saviour is paramount. Any follower of Islam who refuses to do so is automatically rejected from the faith. But the fundamental difference is that Islam does not endorse Jesus as a Lord/God, rather only as a Messenger, one among many including Moses and Abraham, of which the last and final one was Muhammed.

Replying to your question about all Jews becoming Christian at the time of the Second Coming, one way to think about it would be that at the Second Coming of Christ, Jews will come to recognize the arrival of the Annointed One (Christ) as the First Coming of their Messiah, which will make them technically Christian.

Sadly though, I have a feeling that wasn't what was being thought of when the answer was being opined.

Roman Catholic dogma says that there is the possibility for someone who has led a good life but doesn't believe that Jesus was God to go to heaven, and I assume Eastern Catholics would have a similar opinion.

As for protestants, there isn't really a defined dogma, so I think it comes down to just different interpretations of the bible. Some protestants will say that even all catholics go to hell, while others will say that hell is a catholic myth that doesn't exist. Not trying to make protestants seem crazy, these are obviously extremes of a spectrum that encompasses a lot of different beliefs.

The Catholic Church officially teaches:

When she delves into her own mystery, the Church, the People of God in the New Covenant, discovers her link with the Jewish People, "the first to hear the Word of God.

The Jewish faith, unlike other non-Christian religions, is already a response to God's revelation in the Old Covenant.

To the Jews "belong the sonship, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises; to them belong the patriarchs, and of their race, according to the flesh, is the Christ"; "for the gifts and the call of God are irrevocable."

Neither all Jews indiscriminately at that time, nor Jews today, can be charged with the crimes committed during the Passion of Jesus Christ. The Jews should not be spoken of as rejected or accursed as if this followed from Holy Scripture.

The first chapters of "The Myth of Hitler’s Pope: How Pope Pius XII Rescued Jews From the Nazis" by Rabbi David Dalin, Ph.D. chronicles the acts of the Popes over the centuries in support and protection of the Jews. http://www.catholicleague.org/pius/dalinframe.htm

In addition, the Catholic Church believes that those who die never hearing of Christ but have sought the truth and does the will of God as they understand it can be saved. See Romans 2:13-16

For more information, see the Catechism of the Catholic Church, sections 597 and 839:

http://www.usccb.org/catechism/text/pt1sect2chpt3art9p3.shtml#839

With love in Christ.
