Space tourism is taking off! Are you on board?

I just got finished watching a CNN new cast on space travel tourism (below). My question is:

Would you pay the 'arm-and-leg' cost of travel to be the first wave (aprox. $200,000) or wait 5-10 years for the price to drop dramatically?

What would you expect to realistically be available with this package?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Jason: up the default tip to 10.00 so we can all go to space.

If mahalo carries space flights, I'm gonna stop tipping and start earning... hehe

Part of the cost is for training because going into space is not a trivial thing. Tourists will need to be trained on what to expect from the feeling of weightlessness (e.g. it could make you throw up) and how to have a safe trip. I would hope the cost includes some mementos of the experience (e.g. video footage of the training and trip).

As for paying $200k - that's more than my condo is worth after this housing bubble... so, no, I couldn't pay that. The other thing to consider is that you're paying for an experience, not a "thing" that you keep / use. Experiences are worth different amounts to different people; however most people generally enjoy shared experiences more - People can watch a movie at home alone, but if they want an experience, they go out to the movies with friends... same with dinner... sight seeing... etc. Going to space would be the ultimate sight seeing trip, so very likely people would want to share it with someone their close to... now you're looking at $400k or more.

I would consider saving up for a $4000 experience, but until the price drops that low, I'll just use my imagination and take my wife to the movies... or better yet, star gazing for free.

I think it more learns towards those that can might and the price is likely to drop a the initial "be the first!" hype wears off.

Absolutely I would pay the money. In the grand scheme of things $200k is not that much money especially when we are talking about going into space.

Sure in the next 5-10 years the prices could be cut in half but if you have the money why wait. If you have the money and want to go into space there is no real good reason I can think of to wait. You never know what is going to happen in the future so waiting could mean missing the opportunity entirely.

I agree with you all the way! Only, I think it will drop way below half once it's started and fully funded. It's a technology which means the more perfected it gets, the cheaper it gets. Something Micheal Dell taught us (besides how to bail out on your employees).

You just done watching the show. So what are you waiting down there on earth? Everyone has already booked in! Did you secure your space room yet? Don't worry there's free internet access and high tech room if you still keep answering your Mahalo :-) See you soon!
P.S. Pets are allowed too especially cats!

I would not. Not only because prices would drop significantly in the next decade, but also because after a decade, possible safety issues would be eliminated. I'd hate to pay five year's salary to go into space only to blow up once out of the atmosphere.

I'd expect to go on a space ship and hang out in orbit or on the moon for at least a few days. I'd also expect to go outside the spaceship in a space suit and hang out. Also, I'd expect some killer souvenir photos as well.

I believe that is the direction they plan to take. Me? Had I the money, I'd be on the first flight. Lifes short in my book. heh

I'm still waiting for the Jet Pack!! Have always dreamed of having one, have been on some websites that claim to have them, but they are not fully developed yet. ( Heavy and cluncky) I would love to travel to space, but am realistic, can't or never will be able to afford it! But will wait with high hopes for my Jet Pack!!
