Hi shewolfsilver:

I think my answer would depend on two things:

Do they have a weapon? and Do they have the intention of causing me harm?

I honestly don't think that whatever in my house is so valuable to protect that I would be using a gun on an intruder. I can always buy a new computer / laptop or a new t.v.

You can see why my answer would depend on those two questions though. First, if they're armed, are they armed with a gun? A knife? By pulling out my gun, the intruder may feel that I intend to harm them and if that's the case, a fight would ensue. If they pull out a knife and I wave my hands up without any weapon, I doubt that they'd actually harm me; they'd rather just take whatever it is they want and get away. If they don't have any weapons, I can at least pull out my gun and threaten to shoot to scare them off. I most likely wouldn't shoot though but see the next paragraph.

The second question is more important. If I'm in bed and an intruder breaks in and approaches my bed, you know that they have an intention to harm you and in that case, I would take out my gun. Would I shoot? Only if I had no other option (ie. they are running at me with a knife). Taking a life is not an easy decision to make.

Basically, would I shoot them? Yes. Could I shoot them? Only if they threaten my life (ie. self-defense).

A news story I saw the other day actually inspired the question. The news story was about a gun toting granny. An eighty year old woman heard someone breaking in her front door. She very calmly pulled the gun out of her bedside table drawer and shot at the intruder. She didn't hit them I don't believe but it was enough to scare them away.

I do have a gun by my bed, and yes, Though I would likely make a non-lethal shot and make sure I could see the person before shooting as sometimes my family members don't knock before coming into our house. I've woken up at 4am before to my elder brother raiding my candy drawer lol

I have 150lb+ dog chained by my door and 3 no trespassing signs.. I think you shouldn't rob this house, is clear. So no warning shots, if someone comes in my house trying to steal my s**t I'm taking out a knee or elbow. That person comes near one of my kids, and I'm taking out a forehead.

Without a doubt I would shoot after I saaw it was someone I didn't know. No warning shots and a body mass shot.

Absolutely! It's my property, and they are trespassing! I wouldn't feel guilty because they shouldn't be breaking in in the first place!

I highly doubt anyone would break into my house at night when they know I am here. For one thing, my dogs would give them holy hell. If they were still bent on breaking in over the racket the dogs would make, then they would probably be bent on doing me harm. If they somehow managed to quiet or kill my dogs and the sound of me chambering a round in the shotgun didn't scare them off, then you bet I would and could shoot them.

Home defense is the most clearcut rationale for gun ownership there is. If every homeowner were known to be armed and ready to defend house and home, there would be far fewer rapes and murders, in my opinion.
