Solutions to the Mahalo Answers voting system - Vote Weight

We should have the "helpfulness" expressed in percents instead. So every category of user would have certain voting weight when they vote:

100% - who posed the question
80% - black belt
60% - brown belt
40% - purple belt
20% - green belt
10% - yellow belt

Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Hi Bugsy,
This is an area that I feel strongly about. Helpfulness appears as a metric on our profiles and influences answer placement, but I don't believe sufficient guidance has been provided on how members should use the feature.

Here are some of my thoughts:
  • Mahalo should establish and communicate the intent/definition of this feature.
  • Jason has said they are keeping tabs on folks' use of the feature, but without appropriate guidelines (or even suggestions) for use, how can users be held accountable? (Like when they think they are voting Digg style.)
  • In an answer somewhere, I read that the belt levels will be changing soon to upper and lower belts. Maybe when that happens, a weighting system may work well.
  • In the current belt system, I'm not confident that a person's ability to rack up points makeshim/her more capable of determining if an answer is helpful or not.

Sounds like an excellent idea, yet the two are not always related. Just because someone is active, does not always mean they can determine how helpful an answer is or is not. This is always subjective, as it can be helpful for the person asking, yet not for the person viewing. I believe there could also be another variable added to this. The higher the belt, the more a user can rate an answer as helpful or unhelpful per day. This combined with weight might be helpful as well.

Below would be how it would work:

100% - who posed the question (allowed 5 extra per day for this question only)
80% - black belt (allowed 25 per day)
60% - brown belt (allowed 20 per day)
40% - purple belt (allowed 15 per day)
20% - green belt (allowed 10 per day)
10% - yellow belt (allowed 5 per day)

Sounds like a great solution to me, even though I'm only a yellow belt at the moment. :)

This sounds like a great idea. Another thing to consider is how the Helpful rating works on questions that mimic opinion polls. Like "Would you buy X awesome new product that Apple is releasing?" Those types of questions are really hard to judge in terms of "best" and "most helpful" answers.
I also think the asker should have a system of ranking the answers so that it's not just best and all the others. But maybe a top 3 or top 2 and the best.

That's an interesting way of doing things... As with most ideas, I'm all for it to see how it works...

"Sacred cows make the best burgers..."

1. Your list excludes white belts. I don't think it should exclude white belts at all.
2. I don't agree with someone else's vote being worth more than mine, especially since there are plenty of topics that I feel I was better equipped to make input on even when I was a yellow belt just a month ago.
