Matt, have you looked at Geni.com ?
It's really great web based software that allows you to start and maintain a very advanced family tree.
The best part is that once you start, it almost becomes viral among your family. You'll wake up and find that Great Aunt Lucy in Ireland filled in 20 family members and told another 5 people about it.
Give it a try:

It generates very nice charts and graphs and there is also a companion product for the iPhone.
It's not very cheap though ($49).

There are many programs out there that can help you with your goal, but some are pretty pricey. Below is a link to GRAMPS, a free software project for genealogy. It is a community project created, developed, and governed by genealogists.
Best of luck

What genealogy program would you suggest for Mac OS X?
I'm friending a bunch of relatives on Facebook and would like to graph them out and understand how they're related to me. Any suggestions on genealogy programs? Inexpensive would be nice... free would be better.
